BLOG: REFLECTIONS ON "JUST A PEEK, PLEASE?"
This was a particularly difficult piece to create.
As a mother, I try to shield my children from all that is hateful in the world. I try to protect them from what is impure. To hold off what is corrupt just a little bit longer. The world is terrible enough. There is no need for them to grow up too fast. But my studio is in my home. They see what I create, and therefore sometimes we have to have difficult conversations. Like today.
This is the quote that I am working with today:
"I have been called many terrible things: Terrorist. Towelhead. Sand Ni**er. But I am making sure that the hate stops with me."
The words are terrible. The history is painful. The imagery I am using is jarring. And my children have questions.
So many questions.
